Using the gears to shift through an anxiety loop
This morning, I found myself caught in a familiar cycle: a habit loop that pulled me into a state of anxiety and discomfort.
Dan Holcomb is a Senior Facilitator and Founding Contributor at Mindshift Recovery. He leads group sessions, facilitates mentor calls, and helps bring the Mindshift Method out of theory and into real, everyday experience. The method sits at the intersection of mindfulness and neuroscience: how the brain forms habit loops, how reward value drives behavior, and how awareness can change that relationship from the inside out.
Dan's path to this work is personal. For years, he struggled with substances and other deeply grooved habit patterns. Traditional willpower-based approaches never stuck. In 2019, he encountered the work of Dr. Judson Brewer, now a trusted friend and mentor, and something shifted. For the first time, he could see that his behavior wasn't a moral failure; it was a learning process. Once he started meeting cravings and difficult emotions with curiosity instead of force, the reward value began to update on its own.
Dan is helping develop and launch the Mindshift podcast and is part of a growing effort to expand Mindshift's reach through the Essential Course, in-person groups in the Atlanta area, and new ways of bringing the method to people where they are. Outside of Mindshift, he serves as Chief Operating Officer of Gruen Systems USA. He's a lifelong musician and songwriter whose music explores many of the same themes: growth, fatherhood, mistakes, and change.
